A really wonderful day

The Boy and I have Friday's together. John creeps out of the bedroom before the sun is up for work and we stay snuggled in bed until his curiosity stirs us awake. This morning he was comfortable and the room was quiet until almost eight o'clock. "Mommy! Mommy!"He rolled over so that we were nose-to-nose,"Hi!"

We went to the bathroom and sat together on our respective toilets. He is so cute with his pants down around his ankles. He was worried about the mess the cat had made while eating her food, so he picked up each little bit of cat food and then dragged her over to the freshly full bowl. He laid down on the bathroom floor so that he could watch her eat, he chewed right along with her.

We went downstairs to make our breakfast: an egg scramble with chives, mushrooms, and cheddar. I gave a spoon to stir with and he quite well containing himself and the mess. We shared some toast and tea and got ourselves ready to go to the library. He asked for his jacket and hat and gloves and off we went.

The woman at the library is wonderful and has taken a particular liking to Oliver Finn. Before today he has never shown much of an interest in the stories she reads during story time. But, there was something about the books she chose about birds that he was interested in. He stood right at her knee to better see all the pictures and help turn the pages when she asked him to.

He has a little friend named Willow at the library. One of the coolest little girls I've ever met, the best example of 'an old soul' I can imagine. They could grow up and childhood sweethearts and live happily ever after and both families would be happy. The Boy offered to share his tea with her and she offered him the honor of putting the last piece of the puzzle into place. They sat next to each other for a while and then it was time for arts and crafts. By this time, The Boy is usually tired and hungry and has little patience for being told not to eat crayons or glue. But, today he sat in his own chair and we made snacks for the birds to eat: pretzels covered in peanut butter, coated with bird seed, tied on a string. We nibbled a bit and worked a bit and nibbled a bit and worked a bit and before we left he was looking around and looking around and I couldn't figure out what he was looking for until I realized that he wanted to make sure we had them with us to bring home.

On our way home we stopped on Main St. for a while and watched the tractors and dump trucks move the snow from here to there. We made a pot of tea, warmed up some pasta and homemade chunky sauce: ground bison, onions, garlic, peppers, zucchini, mushrooms, stewed tomatoes. He picked out a book called "Little Trucker" and we read it 3 or 4 or 5 times. He wanted to bring his doggie up to bed with us for a nap, so we all snuggled in. The Boy flopped onto his belly in what we call the stinkbug position, he had one hand tucked into my shirt collar and the other wrapped around the dogs tail.

After an hour of sweet dreams, we filled our cups with tea and went to the grocery store. He greeted anyone who would listen with a "Hi!" or a story about the toast he was sampling. He read his favorite books about the Little Blue Truck on the Farm and the Kitty Cat named Cleo all the way home. He said all the words he knows how to say related to trucks and farms and kitty cats, too many to list.

When we got home, I stood him on a stool at the counter and he helped me wash dishes and make dinner. We had fresh strawberries and cream for dessert. We sat in the rocking chair and went through his new favorite book The Barnyard Dance a few times. Then he asked me to brush his hair. I nursed him to sleep and stayed up for quite a while, savoring every breath of sleep in my arms.
