It has been just more than an year and I finally found myself ready to go back the work schedule I had before The Boy. I have missed my first several bedtimes with late rehearsals and 24 hour shifts at work. Surprisingly this has been the easiest big change to transition back into. My worries are set to ease when I see The Boy and His Daddy puttering around the yard, exploring through the woods, or napping on the couch. They are very close and it is so wonderful to watch them together.
Selfishly, my greatest concern is of a change in sleep habits. I have realized that after 15 months of not having a single full nights sleep - I am tired. The reality is that his sleep cycles seems to shift between Really Amazing 12 Hours to Uhg Up Every Couple Hours every three weeks or so regardless of what we do. A lot has been changing, he now typically only takes one nap a day instead of two, His Daddy has been putting him to bed and getting up with him at night and there isn't a direct correlation. Perhaps there's a delayed reaction that we're not able to connect, I don't know. But, what I need to remember is that he changes and the seasons change and the time changes and we all just need to adapt. And with that, the transition back to a full work schedule has been MUCH easier and smoother.
And may I just take a minute to acknowledge how fortunate we are to be able to alternate our schedules in such a way that allows The Boy to spend his days exclusively with his parents. We recognize that this is a very rare opportunity and are so grateful.
